hCare, a True “Clinical Transformation”

What’s the latest on hCare, HCA’s electronic health record? Find out straight from those in the know. Below is a recent dispatch from Mary Mirabelli, VP of HCA’s Clinical Services Group and EHR Implementation Director.

We have been working on brining Advanced Clinicals live throughout the HCA family of hospitals. When we talk about Advanced Clinicals it means CPOE (Computerized Physician Order Entry), Physician Documentation, Clinical Decision Support and Problem Lists. Last week we had a three day planning session to start figuring out how to roll this out in a big way.

I’ve been at HCA for nine years and I am perpetually amazed at how we think about deploying work across nearly 165 hospitals! We get to think about deployment in a very different way given our size and scale. Our planning session last week had about 20 people from various parts of the company — from clinician leaders to educators to physicians to information technology leaders.

We did very detailed planning and had super smart folks helping to think through a strategy. We are planning to kick off in the fall with about 20 hospitals. The amount of work to be done is astounding for each of our hospitals. Blatantly apparent is that this work is all about “Clinical Transformation.” This is what makes this exciting and a challenge — the lessons we have learned from our pilot locations have been invaluable.

So we have focused in multiple ways on building physician leadership, clinical leadership and IT partnership to get the job done, as well as on creating Physician Advisory Groups, establishing resolutions with our Medical Executive Committees, building detailed adoption plans, and conducting “meet your EHR” sessions. All of these are important and part of our plan.
