Dr. Richard Tayrien to Head hCare EHR Implementation

Richard TayrienIn an earlier blog post, we wrote about Dr. Jonathan Perlin becoming the chair of the Federal Health Information Technology Standards Committee, which was formed last year as part of the HITECH Act. As chair, Dr. Perlin will lead the way in forming standards, implementation specs and certification criteria for electronic health records nationwide — not just for HCA and hCare (read that post).

Here’s some more news about the steps HCA is taking to further embrace an electronic health record and the latest health information technology, as Dr. Richard Tayrien has been appointed HCA’s Chief Health Information Officer.

In this new position, Dr. Tayrien will report to Dr. Perlin, who said this of his new colleague: “During his 25 years in medicine, Dr. Tayrien has proven to be an innovator and gifted leader. He has extensive experience creating and deploying clinical information systems that promote quality and efficiency and improve patient safety. We are very pleased to welcome him to HCA.”

Dr. Tayrien will lead an expanding team of clinicians and informaticists in developing and implementing hCare, HCA’s comprehensive program for advanced health information technologies. In addition to the bar-coding and eMAR technologies already adopted by numerous HCA facilities, hCare will include more computerized provider order entry and an electronic health record with integrated outpatient treatment.

After 18 years as a clinician practicing internal medicine, Dr. Tayrien turned his attention to health information technology. He recently served on the Inpatient Work Group of the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology, an official certification body for electronic health records, and he was recently recognized by the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems for his leadership in the deployment of an electronic medical record and computerized provider order entry system.
